Generative AI companies raised $170.9 billion in private investment in 2025, according to Stanford HAI’s 2026 AI Index. That was close to half of all private AI investment worldwide. In Q1 2026, AI startups took $242 billion, or 80% of global venture funding, Crunchbase reported. This page covers yearly totals, 2026 quarters, country splits and deal size, with every number taken from the organization that published it.
Generative AI funding statistics
The two main sources measure different things. Stanford counts generative AI companies by year. Crunchbase counts all AI-driven startups by quarter, including chips, data centers and robotics.
How much did generative AI companies raise in 2025?
Stanford HAI published its 2026 AI Index on April 13, 2026. The investment chapter uses Quid data on AI companies that have raised more than $1.5 million since 2013.
Private investment covers venture capital and private equity rounds. A wider corporate total adds mergers, minority stakes and public offerings.
| Metric | 2025 value | Change from 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Generative AI private investment | $170.9 billion | Up more than 200% |
| Total private AI investment | $344.7 billion | Up 127.5% |
| AI mergers and acquisitions | $214.4 billion | Up 132.6% |
| Global corporate AI investment | $581.7 billion | Up 129.9% |
| Average private AI deal size | $66.5 million | Up 46% |

Generative AI took 49.6% of private AI dollars in 2025. That is $170.9 billion out of $344.7 billion.
The $581.7 billion corporate figure gets quoted as “AI funding” in a lot of coverage. About 37% of it was M&A, which pays owners of existing companies rather than funding new work. Use the $344.7 billion private figure when comparing against venture data.
Private AI investment fell in 2022 and 2023, rose in 2024, then more than doubled in 2025. The number of newly funded AI companies grew 70.8% in 2025, to 3,499.
AI startup funding in 2026 broke quarterly records
Crunchbase publishes global venture totals a day or two after each quarter ends. Its AI label is broad. It includes model labs, cloud infrastructure, chips, robotics and self-driving companies.
Q1 2026 was the largest quarter Crunchbase has ever recorded. It reached $300 billion across 6,000 startups.
| Period | Global venture funding | AI share | Report date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full year 2025 | $425 billion | About 50% ($211 billion) | Jan 7, 2026 |
| Q1 2026 | $300 billion | 80% ($242 billion) | Apr 1, 2026 |
| Q2 2026 | $205 billion | More than 70% | Jul 2, 2026 |
| Q3 2026 | $159 billion | 64% ($102 billion) | Oct 5, 2026 |

Crunchbase revises figures as late deals come in. Its July report raised Q1 to $305 billion and 2025 to $440 billion. Its October report raised Q2 to $212 billion. Compare quarters using the latest report, not the first one.
Through Q3, venture funding reached $679 billion. That is more than Crunchbase counts for all of 2025. AI’s share fell in Q3, but it stayed 14 percentage points above Q3 2025. AI funding in 2025 was $211 billion, up 85% from $114 billion in 2024.
Smaller rounds continue to close each week. Agent Unfolded tracks AI agent startup deals by month, including Sentra’s $150 million Series C in November 2026.
Which countries attract generative AI investment?
U.S. companies took most of the money in 2025. Stanford puts U.S. private AI investment at $285.9 billion, 23.1 times China’s total.
| Region | Private AI investment, 2025 | Generative AI investment, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $285.9 billion | $163.6 billion |
| Europe | $20.9 billion | $3.2 billion |
| China | $12.4 billion | $1.5 billion |
| United Kingdom | $5.9 billion | Not reported separately |
Source: Stanford HAI, The 2026 AI Index Report, Chapter 4 (Economy), figures 4.2.8, 4.2.10 and 4.2.11, Quid data for 2025. Global.
Generative AI investment in China and Europe combined came to $4.7 billion. U.S. private AI investment grew 160.2% in 2025. China grew 32.2% and Europe grew 7.2%.
These numbers leave out state money. Stanford cites an estimate that Chinese government guidance funds put $184 billion into AI firms between 2000 and 2023. Private totals alone understate China’s spending.
Inside the U.S., California took $218 billion, over 75% of the national total. More than half of U.S. states got less than $100 million.
Megadeals drive generative AI funding statistics
A small number of very large rounds now set the totals. Stanford counted 28 private AI funding events above $1 billion in 2025, up from 15 in 2024.
| Period | $1B+ rounds | Weight of the largest deals |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 15 events | Not reported |
| 2025 | 28 events | Average AI deal rose 46% to $66.5 million |
| Q1 2026 | 14 companies | Top 4 rounds: $188 billion, 65% of the quarter |
| Q2 2026 | 16 companies | $108.6 billion, 53% of the quarter |
| Q3 2026 | 27 companies | About one-third of the quarter |

Stanford counts funding events and Crunchbase counts companies, so the 2025 and 2026 rows are not a single series. The direction is the same in both: more billion-dollar checks each period.
Two companies shaped the first half of 2026. Crunchbase found that OpenAI and Anthropic raised $217 billion between them, 43% of all H1 venture funding.
Frontier lab rounds in 2026
OpenAI closed a $122 billion round on March 31, 2026, at an $852 billion post-money valuation, as reported by TechCrunch. About $3 billion came from retail investors through banks. BizModelInsight breaks down how OpenAI earns the revenue behind that valuation.
Crunchbase lists three more Q1 frontier rounds: Anthropic at $30 billion, xAI at $20 billion and Waymo at $16 billion. In Q2, Anthropic raised $65 billion, close to a third of that quarter’s global total. Reuters reported the post-money valuation at $965 billion.
Q3 had no round in the tens of billions. Databricks and Safe Superintelligence led with $5 billion each.
Conclusion
Three patterns run through the data. Generative AI grew faster than AI as a whole and reached about half of private AI funding. The money is concentrated in one country, one state and a handful of companies. And quarterly totals now swing on whether a frontier lab closes a round in that quarter.
For planning, treat the 2026 quarterly figures as provisional. Crunchbase revises them for months, and AI’s share of venture capital dropped in Q3, the first 2026 quarter without a round in the tens of billions. Stanford’s annual data is steadier but arrives once a year and excludes state-backed funds. Check which definition a number uses before comparing it with another source, since “generative AI,” “AI-driven” and “corporate AI investment” cover very different sets of deals.
