How many AI unicorns are there in 2026?
The count has grown every quarter this year. CB Insights recorded 32 new AI unicorns in Q1 2026, 37 in Q2 and 42 in Q3. For context, the firm counted 11 in Q1 2025.
All of 2025 produced 75 new AI unicorns. The first nine months of 2026 have already produced 111, based on the firm’s quarterly figures.
| Metric | Figure | Period |
|---|---|---|
| New AI unicorns | 75 | Full year 2025 |
| New AI unicorns | 32 | Q1 2026 |
| New AI unicorns | 37 | Q2 2026 |
| New AI unicorns | 42 | Q3 2026 |
| Total AI unicorns | 671 | End of Q2 2026 |
| Total AI unicorns | 706 | End of Q3 2026 |

The total rose by 35 in Q3, not 42. The gap reflects companies that left the private count through IPOs, acquisitions or lower valuations.
New unicorns kept arriving while money pulled back. AI funding fell 33% to $103.3 billion in Q3, down from $153.1 billion in Q2, and deal count hit an 18-month low. Three Anthropic rounds worth $65 billion had lifted the Q2 total. A breakdown of quarterly AI funding totals for 2026 shows the same drop on Crunchbase data.
One caveat applies to every figure here. CB Insights revises past quarters as late deals come in, and its Q2 funding total moved from $149.5 billion in July to $153.1 billion in October.
AI’s share of new unicorns keeps rising
CB Insights found that AI companies made up 61% of new unicorns in 2025, up from 52% in 2024. Data from Statista, which charts the CB Insights series back to 2015, shows the sharpest rise between 2023 and 2025.
Crunchbase reports a lower share because it counts fewer companies as AI. It tagged 47 of the 187 unicorns minted in 2025 as AI-native, or 25%. Crunchbase later revised its 2025 total to 193.
| Measure | Figure | Tracker | Period |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI share of new unicorns | 52% | CB Insights | 2024 |
| AI share of new unicorns | 61% (75 companies) | CB Insights | 2025 |
| AI-native share of new unicorns | 25% (47 of 187) | Crunchbase | 2025 |
| AI-focused companies joining the board | 207, about half of all new unicorns | Crunchbase | 2024 to April 2026 |
Source: CB Insights, State of AI 2025 (January 2026); Crunchbase News, March 17, 2026 and April 30, 2026; global.
The two trackers measure different things. CB Insights includes companies that apply AI in other sectors, such as healthcare. Crunchbase’s 47 counts only AI-native firms, while its 207 figure uses a wider “AI-focused” tag. Compare shares within one tracker, not across them.
The sector mix is broad. CB Insights counted 10 or more new AI unicorns each in healthcare and AI infrastructure in 2025, with Abridge and Fireworks AI among them. In the first half of 2026, Crunchbase found that robotics and new AI research labs led all sectors for new unicorns.
Which AI unicorns have the highest valuations?
Two model developers sit far above every other private AI company. Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion post-money valuation on May 28, 2026, passing the $852 billion mark OpenAI set in March.
Below them, valuations drop by a factor of four or more. A wider ranking of the 50 best-funded AI startups extends this list.
| Company | Last private valuation | Date set | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | $965B | May 2026 | Public S-1 filed October 26, 2026 |
| OpenAI | $852B | March 2026 | Seeking about $20B at $1.25T |
| Databricks | $190B | August 2026 | Up from $134B in February 2026 |
| DeepSeek | $59.2B (CB Insights) or $50B (Crunchbase) | Q2 2026 | First outside financing |
| Prometheus | $41B | Q2 2026 | Physical AI, co-founded by Jeff Bezos |
| Safe Superintelligence | $32B | 2025 | No newer priced round disclosed |

DeepSeek shows how far trackers can differ on one company. CB Insights lists a $59.2 billion valuation, while Crunchbase records $50 billion for the same first financing. This page reports both instead of picking one.
The OpenAI figure may change soon. The Financial Times reported on October 30 that OpenAI cut its target to about $20 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation. That round had not closed at the time of writing.
Exits are removing the largest AI unicorns
xAI left the private count in February 2026, when SpaceX bought it in an all-stock deal. That transaction set the xAI valuation at $250 billion. SpaceX then went public in June, the largest venture-backed exit on record, per Crunchbase.
Cursor maker Anysphere has an agreement giving SpaceX an option to buy it for $60 billion, Crunchbase reported. Anthropic filed its public S-1 on October 26, 2026, with a listing reported for November. If it prices, the private count loses its most valuable company. This tracker of AI companies heading to IPO follows the rest of the queue.
AI unicorn statistics by region put the US far ahead
US companies made up 447 of the 671 AI unicorns at the end of June 2026, or 66.6%, according to CB Insights. New entrants are spread a little wider. The US produced 20 of Q2’s 37 new AI unicorns and 24 of Q3’s 42.
| Region | New AI unicorns, Q2 2026 | New AI unicorns, Q3 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 20 | 24 |
| Asia | 9 | 11 |
| Europe and other regions | 8 | 7 |
| Total | 37 | 42 |
Source: CB Insights, State of AI Q2’26 (July 23, 2026) and State of AI Q3’26 (October 8, 2026); global. The Q2 figure for Europe and other regions is the remainder after the US and Asia.
Asia took 24% of new AI unicorns in Q2, well above its 15% share of the existing total. Europe reached 105 AI unicorns after adding seven in Q3.
Crunchbase data across all sectors shows the same shift toward China. It counted 38 new Chinese unicorns in the first half of 2026, compared with 10 in all of 2025. DeepSeek was the most valuable new unicorn of that half-year.
How fast are AI startups becoming unicorns?
CB Insights put the median time to unicorn status at 3.4 years for AI companies that reached $1 billion in 2026. Nineteen companies founded in 2026 have already crossed the line, with a combined valuation of $60.5 billion.
Founder records drive many of these rounds. Yann LeCun’s AMI Labs raised $1 billion at a $4.5 billion valuation. River AI, led by xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin, raised $1.1 billion at $5 billion.
| Metric | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Median time to $1B, AI unicorns of 2026 | 3.4 years | CB Insights |
| Unicorns founded in 2026 | 19, worth $60.5B combined | CB Insights |
| Seed and early-stage unicorns, Q1 2026 | 47 | Crunchbase |
| AI-focused unicorns since 2024 first valued at $1B at seed or early stage | More than one-third of 207 | Crunchbase |
| Unicorns minted since 2024 now valued at $5B or more | At least 45 | Crunchbase |
Source: CB Insights research brief (October 22, 2026); Crunchbase News (April 2026 and April 30, 2026); global.
Speed carries risk the table cannot show. CB Insights noted that Core Automation moved toward a reported $4 billion target with no product or revenue. A $1 billion mark at seed stage reflects demand for a team, not proof of a business.
Some young companies have grown into their marks. OpenEvidence moved from a $1 billion valuation in February 2025 to $12 billion in January 2026, according to Wikipedia.
Conclusion
Three patterns run through the data. New AI unicorns arrived faster in each quarter of 2026, even as funding fell from its first-quarter peak. Value is concentrated: two model developers sit far above every other private AI company, and exits are starting to pull the largest names out of the private count. The US still mints most new AI unicorns, while Asia’s share of new entrants is climbing.
For planning, the count of new unicorns is a steadier guide to investor appetite than total funding, which swings on a handful of large rounds. Valuations set at seed stage say more about demand for a founding team than about revenue. Keep tracker definitions apart as well. CB Insights and Crunchbase classify AI companies in different ways, and both revise past quarters, so comparisons hold best within a single source.
